New to MS Paint? As basic as it may seem, it actually has some pretty advanced secrets. --- Quick Resize - Ctrl + Keypad "-" or "+". --- Masking Layer Effect - 1. Scribble on the canvas with 2 different colors with the pencil. 2. Right click one color besides the two you chose in the colors box. 3. Left click one of your scribbled colors. 4. Select the eraser tool. Left click all over your scribble. --- Grid Effect - Choose either x6 or x8 magnifier and press Ctrl + G. --- Third Color - Press Ctrl + Any color and hold Ctrl while drawing. --- Smooth Gradient - www.nerdparadise.com/tech/apps/mspaint/gradient/--- View Your Canvas - Ctrl + F. --- Quick Undo - Ctrl + Z (of course) --- Quick Color Swap - Double click a color on your color box. --- Bigger/Smaller Brush - Select any type of writing tool and press Ctrl "+" or "-" on the keypad. --- Custom Brush - 1. Draw a shape. 2. Crop over it. 3. Select transparent crop. 4. Hold shift. 5. Drag. --- Quick Change Dimensions - Ctrl + E. --- Alternate Undo - While drawing, click the right mouse button. --- OTHER STUFF I'M TOO MUCH OF A WIMP TO HANDLE - plutonia-v41.deviantart.com/gallery/#Plutorials--- If I forgot anything please do tell! Thanks! EDIT: STYICKLYPLZKTHXBAI.

Is that a laugh at the idea of gradients or just an evil laugh signalling "I'm going to have fun with this"?

You forgot one thing. if you make a mistake with a line or something, while holding down the right or left button, press the opposite button of the one your holding down to do a quick undo.

Oh yeah I learned that some time ago but I thought using ctrl z better, but I'll add it anyway.

I decided to make a quick and simple tutorial on how to shade a cylinder in MS Paint. I don't know how many of you care about small details but it might come in handy some day. Draw up your cylinder outline Fill it in with a certain color (like gray), add slightly brighter shade on top (if your light source is different you're going to have to make changes) Now to start basic shading (cylinder is magically shorter), pick your gray base color and modify it in the "edit colors" toolbox, turn the luminosity up about 3 levels and add, repeat about 4-5 times going up 3 shades each time (This step is optional)The top edge of the cylinder will be slightly brighter than the side but will follow the same shading technique, the top can stay a solid color or you could be like me and make it inaccurate Lastly, blend the colors by using the pencil tool and just scribbling the shades into each other, or if you want something cleaner you can use the dithering technique which takes longer but can look quite professional. Seeing as how matte mine came out it would likely be plastic or rubber or stone.

Let's see how many people don't see this, shall we? Adding complex backgrounds in MS Paint easily!Step 1Draw your picture, and color everything except the background in. Color the background in very basic colors that were NOT used in the main picture. Step 2Create a complex background with the same dimensions as your picture! My example isn't very complex, or very good looking, but still. Step 3Enable transparency, and change the secondary color to whatever color in the background of your picture you want replaced. Paste your picture over the background. Step 4Continue the procedure. Touch up your picture where necessary. Done!

Superior to XP paint. But just because it looks shinier and can open recent files without having to open a menu. The file bookmark system is very useful for Picture Wars too, less so for SPB.

Well, is there a better version of Paint I could be using?
I'm using the one I'm using because it was the default for my comp.

These old people are just afraid of change, I use new paint and it feels damn good. Autoshapes and anti-aliased brushes are useless, true, but I can bookmark files and open them from the taskbar without even opening paint, which is handy. Why would I swap to a version with less features, removing features that I find useful, and no benefits?

Exactly, so the fact that someone uses a newer version of paint isn't important. The fact that your tools are irrelevant actually makes going out of your way to downgrade a program that comes standard with your operating system make even less sense. I don't understand why your point is helping your argument instead of hindering it.

There's nothing wrong with Windows 7 Paint. It has all the tools of MS Paint, except, AFAIK, invert colors and the third color trick. Plus, it has a bunch of new, helpful tools to help spruce up your pictures. Obviously I use them in a very basic fashion, but I could imagine some of the better artists putting them to good use.
And it never hurts to have infinite undos, rather than 3...

How do you turn off antialiasing? Use the pencil instead of the brush. You can change the pencil's size now.

I thought "pencil not brush" was the case in pretty much every art program :b In paint before Windows 7, the pencil was only one pixel wide, and the brush was what you would use for different sizes of the pencil. Other than paint, though, yeah.
