this is a short story i'm working on. consisting out of pure strangers finding love between them
It was a calm and silent winter night, as the wind illumes into the darkness, between cracks and small open spaces. A man stumbles between the streetlights and cars. As he stumbles and triggers a few car alarms in the process, he thinks to himself; what is happening to me? As he stumbles into the dark he all of a sudden vomits, but without him knowing it, he vomited over a woman her shoes.
She was completely dressed in black, the cigarette was illuming, and a cough of sheer desperation seeped through her mouth as she is trying to say: …uh…ex…excuse me? I was coming back to my senses, and realised of what I had done. The first thing I did was apologizing to her for that little accident. It couldn’t be that bad, could it? I was embarrassed by my actions, and offered her to come to my apartment. With a bit of a stutter, she accepts my offer. Because she looked like she had nowhere else to go, like she was running from something. I could notice, she was scared by something, or someone. We took a shortcut through the park, my place was up in some condo on Gun hill road. While I was sobering up, My subconscious was celebrating the fact I could walk straight. I-I’m Ella, by the way; She stutters, with a small feeling of safety over her. She had my shoes on, I was walking on my socks, it was the least I could do when I vomited over her shoes. It was like she trusted me, like we knew each other for ever. She didn’t hesitate in any sort of way.
As we left the park, right on the corner of Lincoln Avenue, there were a few hoodlums further up the road. And lets just say they didn’t have the rights intentions with me and Ella. As one of them noticed me, I said to Ella; “don’t worry, you’re safe with me…”. We had just crossed the street at Kennedy Avenue, when all of a sudden I felt a blunt pain behind my head. I trembled and everything went black, I was far away as I thought to myself; “I really fucked up”. Ella’s screams of help illume. I see hazy vision of her being dragged by those hoodlums. I decided to take action. And get back up. I took a rod that was lying nearby me, the hoodlums were only a sheer few feet away from me. I grabbed the shower rod. As one of them saw me and said; “well well, looks like he’s gonna try to be a hero”. As my adrenaline fuelled my infant rage and anger, together with the alcohol raging through my body. I softly said; “bring it” As one of them ran towards me to tackle me down to the ground, I jabbed the rod into his stomach. As he trembled to the ground. As I said to him; well, kid, this was probably the dumbest thing you ever did”. As he his begging for mercy, I didn’t show any, until Ella was safe. So I beat him mercilessly, until he was ready to give up. He was twitching, and blood covered my fist. Finally I felt relieved. The hoodlums then scattered away in fear, now I knew that I could survive in this hellhole of a town. I saw Ella on her knees. She looked like she was crying, I ran to her to see if she was alright. In fear I said; “are you okay?” . she looked up, and had a big cut on her left cheek and a blue eye, I picked her up and held her in my arms, She felt safe with me, I felt complete with her.
We went to the E.R. to check up on the bodily damage, now only in the essence of light I could see her real beauty, as we went to go and check up on our scars, I said to her; “My name is Jack by the way, nice to meet you Ella”. She smiled, no one has ever smiled in my presence. For the exception of my loving parents and friends. She said “…thank you for what you did back there…”. After we got our stitches, or whatever I had injected into my body. We went to my apartment. As always, it was trashed, probably the fact I never liked cleaning up the place. I put Ella into my bed, she was far asleep, and I cleaned up my condo. I should probably buy a gun, so I can protect myself better. And protect the ones I love.
The next morning I woke up on my couch, kinda hazy, I saw Ella in the kitchen, making breakfast. she came to me and said; “wake up sleepyhead.”. a smile came to my face, but also a terrible headache, I went to the bathroom to quickly chug down some Tylenol, as then I proceeded back to my living room, where I saw Ella. Man, she was beautiful, although se had a scar on her face, She was still a beauty of never seen proportions. Like those complex sex fantasies you had back in high school or college about that cheerleader everyone thought was beautiful, but not all to bright. But Ella looked like the person who knew to much, out of pure curiosity and worrying for this complete stranger I decided to talk to her, she didn’t let go so easy, but finally she explained, and now I understand why she lives in so much fear….
“A while back I had a serious heroin addiction, now aware of the world around me, I didn’t know the bad sides, I almost died of heroin, and not only through the drug itself, but the person who was supplying me. Little frankie was his name, a notorious drug lord. He was a huge supplier of heroin and ecstasy in this city, and some other cities “
“Why did you start messing up your body like that? Sure I drink alcohol and smoke some reefer now and then, but why heroin?”
“It was a hard time, I was in a lot of financial trouble and I needed a way out of it all, I thought drugs were the way out. I was wrong, I came into more financial trouble then I expected. And that’s when those goons got at me, the cold turkeys, the pain of stopping a drug. I was scared…”
“Why are you telling me this? I only know you for a couple of hours.”
“Because I trust you Jack, you stumbled upon me, offered me a place to stay”
“heh, I vomited all over your shoes, it was the least I could do”
“You saved me from those hoodlums, I owe you more than anyone else.”
I think it’s the right time to tell her that
“i..”
“yes?”
C’mon! you can do this!
“i…lo-“
*Bip bip bip!*
The sound of a beeper plays in my bag, I was so close of telling her that..oh nevermind, I need to get to work, earn some cash, probably sit at home and watch a bit of tv with Ella tonight, If she’s still gonna be here …
“Ella?”
“Yes?”
“Are you still gonna be here tonight?”
“I have nowhere else to go, of course I’ll be here. Is there anything I can do?”
“well I was gonna go and ask you to go shopping, but I’ll get some shopping on the way from work, you just rest today.”.
“uhh, okay.i’ll see you later”
She comes to me and gives me a hug. Man, that boosts my optimism for work, since I believe that a majority are a bunch of tools. Lapdogs of my shitty ass bold boss from who I don’t know the name of.
