I'm rarely ever going to post anything in here; I just want to have something around whenever I doodle something in my spare time. Feel free to comment, if you want. ^_____^; And for those of you wondering, I deleted my previous art thread because it suuuuucked.1. Spike- New Design Concept

It was mostly just practice with the hands and feet, as well as removing the red on his chest and stomach.
(Even though this pic is colorless, but you know what I mean.)

2. Another Shot at SpikeI just want to make sure I'm absolutely satisfied by his appearance before I change it on the roster. I'm also gonna remove one or two of his powers. I just looked at him and noticed he had way too many. And yes, I know the hand holding the coffee is backwards. My mistake.

Screwing around. Searching for a median between... two things. Trying to get, basically, an undetailed, cartoonish style while trying to get body proportions down correctly and away from, as Rety put it, one level up from stickmen. BEGIN CRITICISM

you dont seem to have any understanding of proportions at all. case in point: 2 elbows, mitten hands, neck thicker than both legs, i could go on.

As far as the two elbows thing, that was actually my failed attempt at drawing a shoulder.
But yeah, I get your point. I got lotsa things to improve on. . . . . . But all the same, I have to remember that I'm not going for a realistic style, either. I don't want to draw perfect humans, I just want it to get to the point that it doesn't look retarded.
Which, of course, brings me to a self conflicting choice of whether what I'm doing or not is even worth pursuing... hmm...

Yeah, the arm really just bends in two places (minus hands), but yours does at 3 places, it looks rather weird... The shoulders are actually shaped more like a small speed bump. I like the style an' all, but you need some more practisin'

well think of the shoulders as a ballsocket or something. its pretty round, anyway. its not important that you have a realistic style, just that you understand anatomy and distort it to how you work. i don't mean having a cartoon looking built guy, but just sort of basic understanding. its midnight and ive been drinking vanilla coke, if this doesnt make sense let me know

Don't worry, it made enough sense. Oh, also you dont seem to have any understanding of proportions at all. case in point: 2 elbows, mitten hands, neck thicker than both legs, i could go on. if I'm gonna integrate a more proper form of drawing for this, then it would be best if I knew the remaining things that were off with the sketch I provided. What else did you notice that was off? Just nitpick, even over the smallest details of the body. I'll leave whether or not I fix it as a judgment call, but it's best if I had everything laid out in front of me. So yeah, do that, pl0x.

uh, everything. i dont like the hair, the strands of hair, the face, the hands, head size, proportions.. i guess the limbsize is okay but really that depends on everything else and that doesnt look good from here tl;dr i hate you and your art <3<
Reason for Editing: YOU WERE DOING IT WRONG

Which, of course, brings me to a self conflicting choice of whether what I'm doing or not is even worth pursuing... hmm... That's not an excuse. You STILL need to know anatomy and stuff. Cartoonists and animators have to learn proper anatomy in art school so they can know how to stylize it properly. Obviously you don't need to go that far, but you get the idea.

Yeah, I said the same a couple o' months ago "I don't wanna destroy my cartoon style", then I studied the human body more or less, and it just turns out greater. So yeah, do that.

Obviously you don't need to go that far, but you get the idea. Yes, well, I guess I did make the decision to do that anyway, although now I realize it's a given I need to know my stuff before proceeding. Gotta take baby steps though. To those of you giving criticism, stop me when I actually do something right. I'll be pumping out sketches every so often. Also I'm considering abolishing the hair strands, but that's another matter.

I'm not good at anatomy myself, but I guess this is decent enough. Though, his hand looks way messed up, I can see what you tried to do, but it looks... well, awful. I'm guessing that's a hood-shirt he's wearing, but the hood itself (is that really what you call it?) looks way too big. Also, even with all that hair in the way, his mouth, nose and probably some of the eyes should be showing. I guess being thin is sorta the style, but I think the legs looks a bit too thin to be able to hold up even that little body weight.
Also... I think I criticize too much without being that good at anatomy myself. So don't take my words for granted, it's an amateur's criticism.

- Hand gesture is messed up (Agreed.) - Hood is too big. (also agreed) - No facial details (I did that on purpose; was focusing mainly on the body) - Legs are too thin (Agreed, but I may choose to not fix that.)

Okay.
Stop drawing john12346.
Instead, draw other people as best as you can. Like it or not, you'll need to grasp some basic anatomy to make 12346 look right.
you'll apply these things later to john, and make him look okay.
Don't expect him to look thin again though.

- Legs are too thin (Agreed, but I may choose to not fix that.) I'll say like Destructin, draw other people first, then you can make more creative changes. As of right now, it doesn't really look "cartoony", it mostly just looks... messed up.

Never thought I'd see the day John would try to fix up his style. I have to say, it's welcome. I think it's safe to say that you've drawn more than me over the years, by a good margin, and yet you've still remained so much the same. It's kind of puzzling. But anyway, I support your efforts and will definitely chime in with some commentary when more updates start coming.
