Yo.
Wait, you got AS3 fine but you're having trouble with C?

Yo. Wait, you got AS3 fine but you're having trouble with C? Yeah, I just can't get past the wall. It takes ALOT to make a simple hello world, and it sorta does too in AS3, but thats because it's not console based, it's all GUI, and you have to code the text box etc. I don't know though, got a good place to start? Every time I look at something for it, it goes directly over my head. AS3 was the same way though until I was able to get the concept of an event listener, from there it was smooth sailing. Then obviously javascript, PHP and markup I understood because they're painfully easy

What are you guys talking about?

No lie, Mentell, the best advice I can give is use C++ instead. It's simpler, and the cases in which C is better than C++ are virtually nonexistant.
Hello world is about 5 lines, too, and that's including compiler directives.

Can someone please explain to me what a 'hello world' is? I've seen the phrase jillions of times, but what is it?

Can someone please explain to me what a 'hello world' is? I've seen the phrase jillions of times, but what is it? A generic display message. Basically when you're learning you make a program that displays the message "hello world".

Can someone please explain to me what a 'hello world' is? I've seen the phrase jillions of times, but what is it? The first thing you learn in programming, it makes text appear readibly to you. Examples PHP: Print ' hello world! ' Javascript: document.write('hello world!') Python: print ' hello world! ' (same as php lulz) AS3: (make a textbox label it bla bla) label.text = 'hello world!'

Javascript: document.write('hello world!') for javascript I did alert("hello world") Well that works too, since it creates an alert box. so would prompt('hello world!')

And for c++ it's (after you include iostream.h and set up your main() function):
cout<<"hello world";

And for c++ it's (after you include iostream.h and set up your main() function): cout<<"hello world"; Yeah I know how to do simple stuff like that and declaring variables at this point. Though I think I'll stick with python for now. At least until I get great at that. This thread is now about the general discussion of programming. Those curious about it/have a question/need troubleshooting.

Shouldn't this be in helping out? entertainment - discuss about flash, programming, music, or games. When I say music, it only means if you made the song, not if you like it.

That wasn't help that was a little discussion

MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT PROGRAMMING
so uh when I started this I learned the very basics of the language, and I went back to python and learned GUI and more advanced stuff on that language. Well python is a very high level language and is interpreted, I'd rather have a language that can be run on most machines, so I went back to C++, I'd learn java but eh java sucks.
Anyways, it's not too hard, it's annoying that with every C++ based language I've ever used you just use function to declare a function, but with actual C++ you have to use int or void
I actually don't understand the difference so I guess I'll go google it.
Oh and if anyone wants to start programming learn Python, and if you want to do web design learn HTML(should take like 3 days to a week to learn even the most advanced stuff of the language which isn't advanced at all), then CSS (which should take a week maybe 2 if you're a bit slow), then learn PHP (I have no idea how long this will take you, it's more advanced than the markup languages but it's still really easy, I'd say about on par with python which is also easy.)
If you don't want to learn Python, due to its scripting languageness, and inability to be compiled besides a terrible compiling method that forces you to use a .zip file to keep all the classes you use, then you can code perl, which is similar, but harder to write.
ANYWAYS, if you want a job in programming you should probably do java, or PHP, possibly AS3 I dunno the job market, but I really don't want to learn java, I know AS3 quite well now, and I'm alright with PHP, it was the first language I learned so I've probably forgotten quite a bit of it.
If anyone wants to program but wants a help line PM me(I'd say PM grent also but I don't know if he wants a bunch of help requests so I can't say PM him really), or post in this thread (Ideal action because then everyone else can see the solution)
Programmings cool go do it, then you can be a 1337 h4XxZ0RzZ

In C++ you have to declare the type that you're going to return because C++ is a lot more strict about keeping things the same data type they started out as than any language based off of it.
