.Brawl (pronounced 'dot-brawl') is my version of the .Hack series, that is, if you didn't know, a bunch of video games, anime and manga about an MMORPG. But the game is very weird. If you level up in the game, you get stronger/fitter in real life. And if you die in the game, you go into a coma in real life. More info on .Hack here.
.Brawl//Registration
Shaun used to be an average kid. A Scruffy, blond haired, 14 year old Caucasian kid, who wore glasses with large, round lenses. He lived on a small island to the south of England, and went to a small school. He was doing alright at school, had a few friends, liked cricket and football etc. But his whole life changed when his parents split up. He had to move up north, to Scotland with his father. Which means, having to go to a new school, make new friends and finding a new route for walking his dog. They had a pretty good one back at his first home, round the estate and through the forest. His new school was totally different. It was huge, which was ironic, because there was only about 200 pupils at the school. There was graffiti on the walls, a few windows cracked, and litter all over the playground. The worst part about this school, was the kids in Shaun's class. Dorks, geeks and nerds. Pretty much all of them.
Shaun's first day at this school was very dull and boring compared to his old school. He had to queue up next to the door of his class, before going in for registration. He looked around for a desk to sit at. All of them were being used by geeks and dorks, except for the back row, with only three kids sitting there. A tall boy, with long, curly, ginger hair. His face was also covered with spots. Another boy, much shorter. He had blond hair, that was spiked up. He also had a red line going along his face, above his left eyebrow. It had stitches in it, probably some kind of wound from some of the older pupils. The third was a girl. She had long, brown hair that was tied back into a pony-tail.
Shaun approached the back row, but as he came over, the ginger-haired kid gave him a look.
"Don't get any closer, dork" He hissed
"Hey!" said Shaun "I'm no dork!"
"What's twelve times nine?" said the short kid. Shaun thought for a moment.
"one hundred and eight"
"Oh, I was wrong" Said the ginger kid "You aren't a dork, you're a nerd."
Shaun sighed "look, I'm not a dork, or a nerd" he said "What makes you think that I am?"
"Oh, a number of things" Said the short kid "Mainly your huge-ass glasses." A few kids in the rows ahead were watching now. A few of them giggled at that.
"That's discrimination" said Shaun, his voice a bit louder this time. He was rather angry.
"What you going to do? Cry about it?" Laughed the short kid again. By now, Shaun was bright red. He was seriously pissed. Before he could blurt something out, the ginger kid interrupted.
"Look, you're new here, so you're going to have to do a bit of a test, to make sure you aint a nerd, geek, creep, dork or anything else like that"
Shaun thought for a moment "...What kind of test?"
The ginger kid smiled "Meet me and Gordon..." he paused, and pointed to the short kid "He's Gordon. Meet me and him behind the fourth building at the beginning of lunch break..."
Up until lunch break, the day had been a total bore. He had a two hour English lesson, which was just answering questions about a book called 'The great, green forest', which Shaun had never read. But, the questions were so obvious, he didn't need to have read the book. When the lesson had finally finished, he asked his teacher, Mr Darwin, where the fourth building is.
"It's just opposite this one. Across the playground" He said "Why do you ask? Do you need to go there?"
"Not really. I just need to get to know the school, it's my first day"
"Alright then, you had better get to lunch, eh?"
"Yes, sir"
Shaun ran off towards the door. He threw his equipment into his backpack, and ran towards the fourth building.
Behind the large building, were the kids from Shaun's class, and a few more.
"Your name?" Asked the ginger kid
"Shaun" replyed Shaun
"Shaun....?"
"Shaun Speaker"
"Okay Shaun, meet the gang" He turned around and pointed to the bunch of kids. He pointed to the short kid "Him right there is Gordon" he moved his pointed finger towards another kid. He he was very tall, and had black hair. "That's Kevin" He pointed to the girl that was in the class "That's Kayla" then a younger kid, about nine years old "That's James. We call him 'Mastermind', because he is probably the smartest nine year old on the planet" and then he turned round and faced Shaun "and I am Kyle."
"Alright then" said Shaun "Why have you told me to come here?"
Kyle pulled a Video game case out of his back pocket and opened it. He held it up to Shaun
"Place your hand in the case" He said. Shaun did what he said. "Now, repeat after me.... I, Shaun Speaker..."
"I, Shaun Speaker..."
"Swear on my family's honour..."
"Swear on my family's honour..."
"That I will never reveal..."
"That I will never reveal..."
"The secret lair of gaming..."
"The secret lair of gaming..."
"Even at my dying breath."
"Even at my dying breath."
"Good, now, come with us" Kyle turned round and crouched by a man-hole cover. He lifted it off, and began climbing down. As the others went down, Shaun decided to, too. He followed Mastermind, and pulled the man-hole cover over the hole as he climbed down.
"It's pretty damn dark" frowned Shaun, but nobody could see him.
"Well, I couldn't really smuggle a box of matches into school without a bunch of dorks squealing" Came a voice, but Shaun couldn't see who said it. It sounded a bit like Gordon.
"So, where does this lead?" asked Shaun.
"Our secret lair of gaming" came a different voice. Sounded rather young, probably Mastermind. "It's where we play the ultimate MMOR- oof!" Somebody punched him before he could continue "Er, it's just a place where we play video games"
"So tell me, how did you get video games down here? Wouldn't you get caught?" asked Shaun
"You ask too many questions" said Kyle "We came down here in the dead of midnight"
"Yeah, I mean we would get caught otherwise" Said another voice, with a slightly Italian accent. Probably Kevin.
"Mmmhmm. So, here we are!" said Kyle, sounding rather proud. They had come to a large metal door with a massive padlock on it. Kyle reached into his pocket and brought out a large metal key. He inserted it into the lock, twisted it a couple of times, and then pushed the door open.
"Welcome to Gaming HQ" He smiled "Where we play the ultimate MMORPG, 'The Brawl'"
"Sounds interesting" said Shaun, sounding a bit confused "But, its very dark, I don't see anything" Just as he said that, Kevin lit a lamp. And Shaun could see the Gaming HQ. IT was a round room, with a round table in the middle. On the table were five computers, equipped with drink holders on the monitors, graphic tablets, lamps and anything else you could think of. On the outside of the room there were a number of bean-bag chairs and a television with a Play-station 3, an Xbox 360 and a Wii connected to it. A large metal object sat near the TV, with all the wires connected to it.
"How did you afford all this?" was the first thing Shaun blurted out.
"A very good question" smirked Kevin "Let's just say that my dad knows some people, who know some people, who rob some people"
"...Okay..."
"Well then" Said Kyle "Let's begin, shall we? Mastermind, do you mind sitting this one out?"
"Nope" replied Mastermind "Just as long as I can go on Call of Duty on the PS3"
"Whatever. Now, Shaun, sit down at one of the computers" Shaun sat down in an office chair.
"So, this test. Do I have to beat you in this 'Ultimate MMORPG'?"
"You betcha!" Laughed Kyle. Everybody except for Mastermind sat around the table. Kyle sat next Shaun.
"Computers!" He shouted. He turned to Shaun and whispered "Turn on you PC" Which Shaun did.
"Helmets!" he whispered to Shaun "Put on the VR helmet". Shaun picked up a cap, with a bunch of plastic boxes and buttons on it. A wire came off it and into the back of the computer. He placed it on his head, and tightened it.
"Log On!" Kyle turned round to Shaun and said "You don't have an account, just click here" he pointed to a button on the screen that said 'Sign up!'. After a few moments of entering fake names and addresses, Shaun was ready
"Activate!" Kyle whispered to Shaun "press the large, red button on the front of the helmet three times". Pressing the button was not so easy for Shaun. He used both hands all three times. After a few seconds, he felt a sharp, painful tingle go down his spine, then everything went dark. From this point, Shaun's life was about to completely change, forever.
