a blurb from my book. unedited rough draft shit.
Within a cramped steel room, a collection of ten computer monitors hung from an old, rusty steel wall adjacent to the entrance that was currently sealed shut. Each one depicted an image of a different exotic wild life location, or suburban complex. Along two of the walls were a set of synthetic book shelves that were expertly designed to appear old, and worn as if they were passed down through the generations of who owned them now. They each held a massive, and disorganized collection of thick plant biology books, loose papers that had hand encryptions of a particular, unknown virus, and its effects on a multitude of different forms of plant life. Mixed in were also a few dozen holographic notepads which held more knowledge of this virus. Loose papers also littered the cold, rusty steel floor. A faint trail of red sand lead into the room indicating it was in use moments ago.
Along the ceiling was a single, dim blue light that occasionally flickered as it struggled to stay luminated. However, most of the light that lit this room did not originate from the ceiling light. But the many screens that were left running along the wall.
On either side of it were large ventilation systems that no longer worked. Their inner workings were clogged with grime, and rust from the outside, and had been neglected for some time.
Most of the images were short, looping videos that slowly flew through the dense jungle, or labyrinth like rain forests. Exotic, multi colored birds swiftly glided through the narrow patches of space between the hundreds of ancient trees that made up their home. Each video changed slightly, and focused on other forms of life within these wild areas. Some videos paid their attention to the soft, moist soil floor, and gazed down upon the many thousands of insects that went about their lives mostly unnoticed by giants roamed around them. Clusters of ant colonists scavenged for scraps of fruit, edible leaves, and other insects to feed their ever growing population. Dragonflies, bees, wasps, and other flying insects hovered around hundreds of multi colored flowers that scattered the vast landscape.
Some videos flipped to a more flat, prarry landscape where herds of elk, bison, and other such beasts roamed. The perspective of these videos were vast, and seemed to go on forever. Massive clouds of dust were left behind by these herds, yet Instances of predators could be seen hunting down some of the weaker pack herd members that struggled behind, out of reach from the rest of their family. With their collaborations, they seemed to be able to bring down almost anything they wanted, yet they conserved their energy for the easier pray which fell behind from the rest of their herd.
Suburban life seemed just as peaceful, and natural as the wilderness that some many of the other feeds displayed. Vast complexes of pristine homes blanked a large, curvy flat lands that went on for miles. Finely mowed, tended grass made up for most of the free land, and within those areas families could be seen relaxing while their children played, and enjoyed themselves in the sun with their animal companions. Playgrounds dotted the area where most families would congregate to on a leisurely day. Far off in the distance stood an ultra-massive metropolises that seemed like an imaginary fortress for most of the families that lived within the suburbs.
A loud hiss emanated from two sets of four vents that were built within the top, and bottom the large steel door entrance. A circular lock embedded into the center the door turned clock wise by ninety degrees, and pulled back four large bolts which securely locked the door to all who lacked the required keys to pass it. It slowly slid apart, further grinding down any sand that may have sat underneath it. As it opened, and exposed the room to a brilliant, warm yellow light which outshined the faint blue aura that emanated from the monitors. A woman appeared through the light, and walked into the room. She wore a long, dark red dress that flowed behind her with every step she took, It had black and gold trim that sparkled when embraced by the warm yellow light behind her. On her chest, over her heart was an emblem of a red planet surrounded by a gold ring, a symbol of a great unity between the colonies of Mars. She looked to be around her late thirties, yet held a beauty that was nearly unmatched.
She stood around five feet, and three inches tall. Her hair was long and straight, I ran down past her shoulders and ended In a point just above her lower back. It had a dark red color that would shine like a thousand emeralds in the right light. She had a faint blanket of freckles that wrapped over the bridge of her small nose. She had hazel colored eyes, and slight dark rings under them which was caused by exhaustive night of deal with a large group of important representatives all over Mars. Her right eye brow had a slight gash that cut in two, a scar that had been left behind from a childhood accident. She wore some makeup that emphasized her beauty, such as a soft dark red smoky look for her eyes, and some red lipstick to match her dress.
She lovingly held a small child in her arms, one that appeared to only be four, or five months old. He was wrapped in a black, and red striped blanket, and slepped peacefully despite the worried look on his mother’s face. She walked to the monitors, and carefully did a swiping motion with her right hand across the screens. The images that once displayed the natural thriving forests, and jungles vanished, and re-appeared as something terrifying.
Images of desolate wastelands now dominated each of the screens. Forests that once seemed endless were now nothing more than a field of thick black twigs that jutted out of a charred, black earth. A thick grey smog generated from the industrial life of civilization choked the life out the land, and blocked the distant wastelands that would have seemed o stretched on forever. Closer to civilization, where the Suburbs were, most of the housing had been abandoned, in a desperate attempt to escape a dying world, Large, artistically designed homes were vacant, yet held small furnishings their owners had to leave behind.
Animal carcasses littered the brittle dry, blackened earth, some laid freely along the black earth for scavengers to pick clean. While most other bodies had sunken below the surface during the times of heavy rain. Silence consumed those who were brave enough to listen. Death waited for those who were adventurous enough to travel through such an area.
